Cumberland Academy, our on-site school, is an extension of treatment. Each patient’s academic program, like his treatment plan, is individualized and used to address functional skills such as focusing and sequencing. Special education teachers use positive reinforcement and other behavioral management techniques in the classroom.
Cumberland encourages success through individualized attention. Children with similar cognitive functioning are taught together; for example, patients with brain injuries are integrated with chronic illness patients. This approach allows patients with different medical conditions to just enhance their ability to cope with diverse situations. Traditional textbook teaching is augmented with hands-on experiences, community outings and activities. Prior to discharge, Cumberland’s teachers communicate observations to teachers in the patient’s home community to make the transition more successful.
