Individualized Education
Special education teachers use positive reinforcement and other behavioral management techniques in the classroom.
In most cases, our teachers are able to pick up and follow the curriculum of the patient’s previous school. In cases where the patient is not able to continue with previous school’s curriculum, we utilize Edgenuity, a leading provider of K–12 online curriculum and blended learning solutions.
Our programs accommodate general education and special education needs including:
- Autism
- Serious emotional disability (SED)
- Intellectual disabilities (ID)
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Visual impairment
- Developmental delay (DD)
- Other health impairment (OHI)
- Speech or language impairment
- Specific learning disability (SLD)
- Severe and profound disability (SPD)
- Orthopedic impairment
- Multiple disabilities (MD)
Cumberland encourages success through personalized attention. Children with similar cognitive functioning are taught together. For example, patients with brain injuries are integrated with chronic illness patients. This approach allows patients with different medical conditions to enhance their ability to cope with diverse situations.
Traditional textbook teaching is enhanced with hands-on experiences, community outings and activities. Prior to discharge, Cumberland’s teachers communicate observations to teachers in the patient’s home community to make the transition more successful.
